The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial District, Uche Ekwunife, has decried what she termed waves of fake news and false allegations, which opponents have been using against her ahead for the forthcoming general elections in the state.

She wondered why politicians and their supporters have resorted to politics of calumny instead of issue-based campaigns, saying it does not augur well for Anambra politics.

Speaking during an interactive session with journalists, organised by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, yesterday, in Awka, Ekwunife accused politicians of not showing maturity in their campaigns.

She said: “Politicians don’t practice mature politics; all they do is blackmail to the extent that they forged my letter headed paper to fabricate all manner of falsehood against me. They are out to pull me down and malign my reputation.

“They are even pulling down billboards, tearing and defacing my posters. They forgot that my billboards are in the heart of the people. We can’t continue like this. Just because of election, the opposition is raising false allegations and fake stories against me.”

“I am vying for the Senate under the PDP, and I am proud to be a member of the party.”

She cautioned journalists not to allow themselves be used in publishing falsehood against any politician.

Ekwunife also described incidences of insecurity as bane of the country, maintaining that insecurity progress and development cannot be achieved with insecurity in the South East.

She assured that arrangement has been made to secure life and property of citizens not only in her district, but also across the state.

She disclosed that South East legislators are working out plans to help address insecurity. She, however, advised traditional rulers and chairmen of councils to partner with state government to tackle rising spate of insecurity in the state.

“I have engaged the state governor to work out steps in addressing the issue insecurity. In my own district, I have synergised with the police division to see how we can help. I have given some moral boost to the police formation, and we have solar system to track down criminals in the state,” she said.
